How to Clean a Womanizer — the Official 10 Steps

The official Womanizer cleaning routine, in 10 steps

Four things never to do

If you do not have a toy cleaner

This follows the official Womanizer manual for IPX7 fully waterproof models, with the reason for each step added. Switch the device off before you detach the head or start cleaning.

1. Check that the charging cable is unplugged — waterproof rating aside, never clean it with the cable attached
2. Detach the head cap (the silicone attachment) from the body — it is the part that delivers the stimulation and the part that gets dirtiest
3. Wash the head cap in hot water and treat it with a dedicated toy cleaner
4. Spray cleaner into the pressure chamber — the recess you can see once the head is off — and leave it for a moment
5. Turn the device to its highest setting and submerge it in warm water for one minute — surprisingly, this is the official method. IPX7 full waterproofing (1 m depth, 30 minutes) is what makes it possible, and the air pulses while it runs circulate water into every corner of the chamber
6. Lift it out and shake it gently to throw off the water
7. Keep it running until you no longer hear water inside — that is the remaining water being pushed out by the pulses
8. Switch it off and wipe it dry with a dry cloth
9. Finish the inside of the chamber with a cotton bud and a little toy cleaner — a light wipe with an alcohol pad is fine, but never soak it in alcohol
10. Once it is completely dry, refit the head cap and you are done — store it out of direct sunlight, in the pouch it came with, somewhere dry

1. Oil-based cleansers and body oils — they corrode silicone. For the same reason, skip oil-based lubricant and use a water-based one. Water-based lubricant also rinses straight off, so a water-based product such as Geukrak Gel, formulated to resemble the body's own fluid, stays easy to clean up when used with a toy
2. Soaking it in acetone or strong alcohol — the fastest route to a warped material
3. Cleaning it with the cable plugged in — off limits regardless of the waterproof rating
4. Sealing it away before it is fully dry — the result is much the same as not cleaning it at all

What you can use instead, safest first

1. Unscented, low-irritant soap and lukewarm water — the standard substitute. Lather it, wash, and rinse thoroughly enough to leave no residue; that last part is the point. A baby soap or a pH-neutral cleanser is fine
2. The detached silicone head cap alone can be boiled — the head is silicone with no electronics in it, so around three minutes in boiling water works (never the body). Useful if you have shared it with a partner or simply want to be sure
3. Plain water — fine as a stopgap, but if body fluid or gel is on it, take it as far as a soap wash

What not to use as a substitute

• Wet wipes — alcohol and preservative residue goes straight onto the most sensitive skin
• Scented body wash and antibacterial soap — fragrance and harsh cleansing agents stay on the silicone and cause irritation
• Dishwashing liquid — far too strong, with a real residue risk
• Alcohol, acetone, bleach — the same banned list as above

One note: the Dame Aer uses the same air-pulse principle, but it is only splash-resistant, so it is cleaned somewhat differently. These 10 steps are for fully waterproof Womanizer models.
