An invention that started with an aquarium pump

The Womanizer began in a surprisingly modest place. In the early 2010s Michael Lenke, a retired engineer in Bavaria, Germany, read American research reporting that close to half of all women have difficulty reaching orgasm, and shut himself in his workshop. The material he built his first prototype from was an aquarium air pump. The idea was a single question — could the clitoris, which is highly sensitive, be stimulated by air alone, without rubbing it?

His wife Brigitte tested the prototypes, and in 2014 the patent was filed under the name Pleasure Air Technology. Every "suction" toy on the market today is a descendant of that invention.

The mechanism: not suction, but a pressure wave

The label "suction toy" makes it easy to assume the device pulls like a vacuum cleaner. The actual mechanism is different.

  1. Seal: the mouth of the head wraps around the clitoris and forms a soft sealed space — a chamber
  2. Pressure wave: inside that chamber, air is pushed away and drawn back in rapid repetition — pressure rises and falls dozens of times a second

In a pilot study designed by Dr Jennifer Berman, a urologist and sexual health specialist, women around menopause who had difficulty reaching orgasm were given a Womanizer to use. Every participant reached orgasm, and 86% reported improvement in the quality, intensity and frequency of their orgasms. It was a small pilot and the manufacturer took part in it, which are real limits — but it matters as an early case of a toy being clinically evaluated as a tool for improving sexual function.

What is certain is this: only a minority of women reach orgasm from penetration alone (about 18%, in a 2017 survey of 1,055 adult women in the United States), the clitoris is the organ at the centre of orgasm, and air pulse is the technology that stimulates it with the least burden.
